Amaravati, the planned capital of Andhra Pradesh, is set to become the world’s first city powered entirely by renewable energy.
The city aims to generate 2,700 MW of clean energy from solar, wind, and hydropower, eliminating dependence on fossil fuels.
The project, costing around ₹65,000 crore, spans 217 sq. km along the Krishna River within the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region (8,352 sq. km).
Mandatory rooftop solar will be installed on at least one-third of government housing, and net metering will be adopted for all government and commercial buildings.
Green building standards, energy-efficient infrastructure, and EV-based public transport (metro & buses) will be key features.
A 20,000 RT District Cooling System (PPP with Tabreed, signed 2019) will reduce electricity demand for cooling the Secretariat and High Court by 50%, addressing rising heatwave impacts.
Town planners have already installed 415 kW of rooftop solar across Anganwadis, e-health centres, schools, and public facilities.
The project supports India’s climate goals and aims to make Amaravati a global model for sustainable urban design.
