📰 In News: AM/NS India Targets 70% Green Steel Production by 2027
ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) announced plans to make 70% of its total steel production ‘Green Steel’ by 2027.
Definition of Green Steel (as per India’s upcoming Green Steel Taxonomy):
Steel produced from plants with CO₂ equivalent (CO₂e) emission intensity < 2.2 tonnes of CO₂e per tonne of finished steel (tfs) qualifies as Green Steel.
Current status:
AM/NS India’s current production: 9 MTPA, to grow to 15 MTPA by Apr–Jun 2026.
Currently 65% of steel production uses natural gas, resulting in lower carbon emissions.
In 2023–24: 2.23 tCO₂e/tfs; In 2022–23: 2.17 tCO₂/t crude steel, about 14% lower than earlier levels.
Green Steel Taxonomy Star Ratings(to be rolled out in 2026–27):
3-star: 2.2–2.0 tCO₂e/tfs
4-star: 2.0–1.6 tCO₂e/tfs
5-star: below 1.6 tCO₂e/tfs
Verification Authority: The National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology (NISST) will verify green steel claims and assign star ratings.
This move aligns with India’s climate goals and aims to decarbonise the steel sector, which is a major industrial emitter.
