Context: The festival of Baisakhi is being celebrated in Punjab with great enthusiasm, marked by religious devotion, cultural fervour, and historical remembrance.
Religious Significance:
On 13 April 1699, Guru Gobind Singh Ji founded the Khalsa Panth at Gurdwara Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, Anandpur Sahib.
Devotees pay obeisance at Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple), Amritsar, and other Gurudwaras while listening to Gurbani.
Cultural & Agrarian Importance:
Baisakhi marks the harvest of wheat, symbolising prosperity and thanksgiving.
Farmers traditionally begin reaping the Rabi crop during this period.
Historical Importance:
The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre (1919) occurred on Baisakhi, when British officer General Reginald Dyer ordered firing on innocent people.
The massacre became a turning point in India’s freedom struggle, strengthening nationalist sentiments.
Tributes are paid annually at Jallianwala Bagh to commemorate the martyrs.
