Brazil confers its highest civilian honour ‘Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross’ on PM Modi
Why in News?
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with Brazil’s highest civilian honour, the ‘Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross’, during his State visit to Brazil.
- The award was presented by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in recognition of PM Modi’s contribution to strengthening bilateral ties and India–Brazil cooperation on global platforms.
About the Honour
- The National Order of the Southern Cross (Ordem Nacional do Cruzeiro do Sul) is Brazil’s highest civilian decoration.
- It is awarded to foreign nationals for their exceptional service in strengthening relations with Brazil.
- The Grand Collar is the highest grade of this Order.
Highlights of PM Modi’s Brazil Visit
- Attended the BRICS Summitin Rio de Janeiro:
- Advocated reforms in international institutions to give more space to the Global South.
- Called for fair representation, credibility, and effectiveness of global governance systems.
- Stressed climate justice as a moral duty, not an option.
- Proposed redefining BRICS under India’s upcoming presidency as “Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability”.
- BRICS Leaders’ Declaration:
- Strongly condemned the terrorist attack in Jammu & Kashmir (April 22, 2025) which killed 26 people.
- Called for zero tolerance for terrorism and rejected double standards in countering terrorism.
- Bilateral Engagement with Brazil:
- Target: Increase India–Brazil trade to $20 billion in 5 years.
- Both sides agreed to expand the Mercosur preferential trade agreement.
- Cooperation in agriculture, food processing, space technology, digital public infrastructure identified as key sectors.
- Plans for adopting India’s UPI digital payments system in Brazil were discussed.
