Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with ‘The Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago’, the country’s highest civilian honour, during his state visit to Port of Spain on the second leg of his five-nation tour.


Key Highlights of the Visit

  • Highest Civilian Honour: PM Modi received ‘The Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago’ in recognition of his global leadership, diaspora engagement, and humanitarian efforts during COVID-19.
  • Bilateral Talks: Held wide-ranging discussions with PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar on agriculture, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, digital transformation, UPI, capacity building, culture, and people-to-people ties.
  • Digital Cooperation: Trinidad and Tobago became the first Caribbean nation to adopt UPI; both sides agreed to expand collaboration on India Stack solutions (DigiLocker, e-Sign, GeM).

  • Diaspora Engagement:
    • Announced OCI card eligibility for the 6th generation of Indian-origin citizens.
    • Warm welcome with Bhojpuri cultural music and Indian heritage symbols.
  • Developmental Support:
    • 2000 laptops gifted for digitizing education.
    • Agro-machinery worth $1 million provided to strengthen food security and processing.
    • Upcoming prosthetic limb fitment camp for 800 individuals.
  • Healthcare Cooperation: Recognition of Indian Pharmacopoeia, donation of haemodialysis units and sea ambulances; MoUs signed in pharmacopoeia and healthcare.
  • Cultural & Educational Exchange: Six MoUs exchanged, including ICCR Chairs for Hindi and Indian Studies, cultural cooperation, sports, and diplomatic training.

Context

  • Modi’s visit to Trinidad and Tobago came after his Ghana visit, where he was awarded the ‘Officer of the Order of the Star of Ghana’.
  • This marked the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister in decades and aimed at strengthening ties with the Caribbean region and CARICOM.
