In News – UPSC Centenary Year Celebrations (2025–2026)The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) will commemorate its 100th year with year-long celebrations from October 1, 2025 to October 1, 2026. The decision was taken in a Commission meeting chaired by UPSC Chairman Ajay Kumar.Key highlights:
- Launch of commemorative logo & tagline along with new initiatives and reforms.
- Employee participation encouraged through idea submissions for the celebrations.
- Focus on introspection, innovation, and future vision for the next century.
- UPSC’s legacy: Symbol of transparency, fairness, and meritocracy in senior-level recruitment for Government services.
Historical Background:
- First established on October 1, 1926 under the Government of India Act, 1919, based on the Lee Commission (1924) recommendations.
- Became the Federal Public Service Commission in 1937.
- Renamed as Union Public Service Commission with the adoption of the Constitution on January 26, 1950.
Constitutional Mandate:
- Article 320 of the Constitution: UPSC to be consulted on all matters of recruitment to civil services and posts.
- Conducts examinations, direct recruitment, promotions, deputations, and absorption.
- Frames and amends Recruitment Rules.
- Advises the Government on disciplinary cases and other service matters.
Significance:
The Centenary Year is an opportunity for UPSC to celebrate its legacy, reinforce its role in nation-building, and align its systems for the challenges of the future.
