WEST FLOWING RIVERS OF PENINSULAR INDIA
(Narmada – Tapi – Mahi)

West-flowing rivers are structurally controlled rivers of the Peninsular Plateau that drain into the Arabian Sea / Gulf of Khambhat. Unlike east-flowing rivers, they are shorter but economically and strategically significant.

1. NARMADA RIVER
(Largest West-Flowing Peninsular River | 5th Longest in India – 1,312 km)

The Narmada River originates from the Amarkantak Plateau (Madhya Pradesh) and flows westward through a rift valley between the Vindhya Range (north) and Satpura Range (south) before draining into the Arabian Sea. It is known as the “Lifeline of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.”

It has 41 primary tributaries —

  • 22 Left Bank (from Satpura Range)
  • 19 Right Bank (from Vindhya Range)

  • Important for Irrigation, Hydropower & Drinking Water

 2. TAPI (TAPTI) RIVER
(Major West-Flowing River | Parallel to Narmada)

The Tapi River originates in the Betul district (Madhya Pradesh) and flows westward parallel to the Narmada before draining into the Arabian Sea. It forms a rift valley along the Satpura Range and is often called the “Twin of Narmada” and mythologically the “Daughter of Surya.” The Tapi basin has more tributaries on the Left Bank, draining a larger catchment area.
