Former Jharkhand CM Shibu Soren passes away

  • Shibu Soren, former Chief Minister of Jharkhand and senior tribal leader, passed away at the age of 81 in New Delhi on the morning of August 4, 2025.
  • He had been suffering from a kidney ailment and had suffered a stroke about one and a half months ago.
  • He was undergoing treatment at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, where he had been on life support for the past month.
  • Soren was a Rajya Sabha MP and the founder-president of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).
  • Popularly known as "Guruji", he played a central role in the Jharkhand statehood movement and was a strong advocate for tribal welfare and the rights of the marginalized.
  • He served as Chief Minister of Jharkhand on three occasions and had a long parliamentary and legislative career.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and described him as a “grassroots leader” committed to the upliftment of the poor and tribal communities.
  • PM Modi also spoke to Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren, Shibu Soren’s son, to convey his sympathies.

  • The Jharkhand Government has announced three days of State Mourning from August 4 to August 6, 2025.
  • All government offices in Jharkhand will remain closed on August 4 and 5.
  • The Monsoon Session of the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly has been adjourned sine die.
  • The Rajya Sabha also observed silence and adjourned for the day in honor of the sitting MP.
