Bihar Announces Additional ₹3,000 Annual Assistance for Farmers under Jananayak Karpoori Thakur Kisan Samman Nidhi

The Government of Bihar has announced the Jananayak Karpoori Thakur Kisan Samman Nidhi, a new state-funded direct income support scheme aimed at strengthening the financial condition of farmers. Under this initiative, eligible farmers will receive an additional ₹3,000 annually from the State Government over and above the ₹6,000 per year already provided by the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) of the Central Government. Consequently, eligible beneficiaries in Bihar will receive a total annual income support of ₹9,000. The scheme was announced as part of the Bihar Budget 2026-27 and is intended to improve farm incomes and provide greater financial security to cultivators. (Hindustan Times)The additional assistance under the Jananayak Karpoori Thakur Kisan Samman Nidhi will be separate from PM-KISAN and will be transferred directly into farmers' bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism. According to reports, the State Government has directed the Agriculture Department to identify eligible beneficiaries so that the scheme can be implemented efficiently. The benefit is expected to primarily cover farmers already receiving assistance under PM-KISAN, thereby ensuring smooth integration with the existing beneficiary database. (Hindustan Times)The scheme is expected to provide the greatest relief to small and marginal farmers, whose agricultural income often remains insufficient to meet rising cultivation costs. The additional financial support can be utilized for purchasing seeds, fertilizers, irrigation inputs, farm machinery services or meeting other agricultural expenses. By supplementing the existing PM-KISAN assistance, the State Government aims to enhance farmers' disposable income, reduce financial stress and strengthen agricultural sustainability. (Hindustan Times)At the district level, implementation has already begun. For example, Jehanabad district has identified 41,778 PM-KISAN beneficiaries who are expected to receive benefits under the new scheme. Similar identification exercises are being undertaken across Bihar to facilitate timely DBT transfers. Reports indicate that after the release of the upcoming PM-KISAN instalment, the State Government is expected to initiate disbursement under the new scheme as well. (Hindustan Times)The introduction of this scheme reflects Bihar's policy focus on agricultural income support and complements the Central Government's PM-KISAN programme rather than replacing it. The initiative also demonstrates the increasing role of States in providing top-up financial assistance to farmers through targeted welfare measures.
