Engineers India Limited (EIL) has successfully delivered project management services for the Durgapur–Kolkata section (132 km) of the Durgapur–Haldia Natural Gas Pipeline, a key component of the Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga (PMUG) Project. The section was inaugurated by Narendra Modi on 18 July 2025 at Durgapur, West Bengal.
The successful completion of the Durgapur–Kolkata section under the Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga project highlights India’s progress in expanding clean energy infrastructure in eastern India. The involvement of a PSU like EIL as a Project Management Consultant demonstrates the importance of institutional capacity and technical expertise in executing large-scale infrastructure projects.
From an energy perspective, the project strengthens the transition towards a gas-based economy, facilitating access to cleaner fuel for industries and households. The pipeline enhances regional connectivity, particularly in West Bengal, thereby promoting industrial growth and urban energy access.
Technologically, the use of advanced methods like Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) and the successful execution of complex river crossings indicate India's growing capabilities in modern engineering solutions. However, challenges such as Right of Use (RoU) acquisition underline persistent issues related to land access and project delays in infrastructure development.
Overall, the milestone contributes to sustainable development goals, energy diversification, and regional economic integration, especially in eastern India.
The completion and inauguration of the Durgapur–Kolkata pipeline section marks a critical step in strengthening India's natural gas grid, improving clean energy access, and advancing the objectives of the Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga project.
