IN NEWS: Foundation of India’s First Green Hydrogen Hub in Andhra Pradesh
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for India’s first Green Hydrogen Hub at Pudimadaka near Visakhapatnam on 8 January 2025. The project, led by NTPC Green Energy Limited in collaboration with New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh, is a major step under the National Green Hydrogen Mission aimed at achieving energy transition and Net Zero targets.
The establishment of this hub represents a paradigm shift in India’s clean energy ecosystem, focusing on green hydrogen as a future fuel. Hydrogen produced using renewable energy can significantly reduce dependence on fossil fuels, especially in hard-to-abate sectors such as refining, fertilisers, steel, and aviation. The initiative aligns with India’s commitment to climate action and decarbonisation pathways.
| Component | Details |
|---|---|
| Renewable Energy Capacity | 20 GW |
| Green Hydrogen Production | 1500 tonnes per day (TPD) |
| Green Hydrogen Derivatives | 7500 TPD (green methanol, green urea, SAF) |
| Investment | ₹1.85 lakh crore |
| Area | 1600 acres |
The large-scale capacity indicates India’s ambition to become a global hub for green fuels and related technologies.
The project integrates a comprehensive industrial ecosystem, including:
This integrated model ensures end-to-end value chain development, from production to export.
The project is expected to:
The initiative directly contributes to:
Thus, it acts as a critical pillar in India’s energy transition strategy.
