IN NEWS: INDIA BECOMES WORLD’S SECOND-LARGEST 5G USER BASE

India has emerged as the world’s second-largest 5G subscriber base with more than 400 million 5G users, according to Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. The development highlights India’s rapid telecom expansion and its emergence as one of the fastest adopters of next-generation digital communication technology globally. The achievement reflects the accelerated pace of India’s digital transformation since the launch of 5G services in 2022.

Rapid Expansion of 5G Infrastructure

India’s 5G rollout is considered among the fastest globally.According to the data cited:

  • 5G services are now available across:
    • Almost the entire country
  • Network coverage reached:
    • 99.6% geographic coverage
    • Around 85% population coverage
  • Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) installed:
    • 4.69 lakh 5G Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs) by March 2025

The rapid deployment demonstrates significant improvement in telecom infrastructure and digital connectivity capacity.

Growth in 5G Subscribers

Since the launch of 5G services:

  • Around 25 crore mobile users adopted 5G services
  • India became:
    • The world’s second-largest 5G subscriber base
    • One of the fastest adopters globally

The expansion indicates increasing digital consumption, smartphone penetration and high data demand in India.

Rural Connectivity Expansion

The telecom ministry also highlighted major progress in rural telecom penetration.Key developments include:

  • Rural telephone connections increased by:
    • 42.9%
  • Connections rose from:
    • 377.78 million (March 2014)
    • To 539.83 million (September 2025)

The growth rate in rural areas was nearly double the urban increase, indicating expansion of digital access beyond metropolitan regions.

Significance of 5G for India

The rapid growth of 5G has strategic implications for:

  • Digital economy expansion
  • Smart manufacturing
  • Artificial Intelligence integration
  • Internet of Things (IoT)
  • Telemedicine
  • Online education
  • Autonomous mobility systems
  • Industry 4.0 applications

The expansion also supports India’s broader vision of:

  • Digital India
  • Viksit Bharat 2047
  • Technological self-reliance
  • Inclusive digital governance

Strategic and Economic Implications

The telecom sector is increasingly becoming a key pillar of India’s economic and technological strategy.A strong 5G ecosystem can contribute to:

  • Higher productivity
  • Innovation ecosystems
  • Startup growth
  • Digital public infrastructure
  • Improved governance delivery
  • Global competitiveness in telecom technologies

India’s growing telecom scale also strengthens its position in future global telecom standard-setting processes related to 6G and advanced communication systems.

Challenges Ahead

Despite rapid expansion, several challenges remain:

  • Need for affordable 5G devices
  • Rural infrastructure gaps
  • Spectrum efficiency
  • Cybersecurity concerns
  • High capital expenditure requirements
  • Semiconductor dependency

Sustained investment in telecom R&D and indigenous technology development will remain critical for long-term competitiveness.
