IN NEWS: World’s smallest wild cat (Rusty-spotted cat) recorded for first time in Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh

Introduction

A rare sighting of the Rusty-spotted cat, the smallest wild cat species in the world, has been recorded for the first time in Veerangana Durgavati Tiger Reserve (VDTR), Madhya Pradesh. The species, classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN Red List, was captured through camera traps during a tiger estimation exercise (2024).

ANALYSIS

Discovery & Scientific Significance

  • First-ever photographic record of Rusty-spotted cat in VDTR
  • Captured via camera trap on March 12, 2024
  • Location: Dongargaon range, VDTR
