Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) celebrates World Standards Day in Coimbatore
1. Context:
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Coimbatore organized Manak Mahotsav on 28 October 2025 at Hotel Merlis, Coimbatore, marking the celebration of World Standards Day 2025. The event acknowledged the critical role of standards in everyday life and industrial development.
2. Theme 2025:
This year’s theme continues under the multi-year global campaign —
“Shared Vision for a Better World,” with a special focus on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17 – Partnerships for Goals.
It highlights the importance of collaboration among industries, governments, and organizations through standardization to achieve sustainable development.3. Key Highlights of the Event:
- Participation: Around 350 participants including industrial representatives, government officials, manufacturers’ associations, academicians, laboratory professionals, and BIS Standard Club members from engineering colleges attended.
- Chief Guest: Padma Shri Dr. G. Bakthavathsalam, Founder of KG Hospital, emphasized the significance of standards and quality in achieving excellence.
- Address by BIS Officials:
- Smt. G. Bhavani, Scientist-F & Head, BIS Coimbatore, elaborated on the importance of World Standards Day and this year’s theme.
- Shri V. Ramesh, Director, BIS Coimbatore, read the World Standards Day message from ISO, ITU, and IEC, stressing the linkage between SDGs and Indian Standards.
- Special Addresses:
- Dr. Meenakshi Ganesan, Deputy Director General (Southern Region), BIS, discussed the role of standards in industrial planning and innovation.
- Dr. Shankar Prabhakaran, Director-Operations, KGiSL Institute of Technology, spoke on Redefining Standards for Disruptive Technologies and a Sustainable Future.
- Shri Ravi Ganapathy, Regional Director, GovEVA, Chennai, highlighted ESG practices and their importance for sustainability.
4. Additional Initiatives:
- Launch of “Run for Quality” Marathon to be held on 1 November 2025 at Race Course, Coimbatore; its logo was unveiled during the event.
- Recognition and Awards:
- Felicitation of All-India First Licence and Regional First Licence holders.
- Awards for Best Performing Standards Clubs’ Mentors and Resource Persons.
- Prizes distributed to winners of National and Branch-level Online Quiz Competitions.
