India Exports First-Ever GI-Tagged Indi and Puliyankudi Limes to the UK

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has facilitated the first-ever export of GI-tagged Indi and Puliyankudi Limes from India to the United Kingdom. - Export Details:
- The total consignment weighed 500 kg.
- It included 350 kg of Indi Lime from Vijayapura, Karnataka, and 150 kg of Puliyankudi Lime from Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu.
- The shipment was sent by air, showcasing India’s efforts to expand the international footprint of its GI-tagged horticultural produce.
- Product Significance:
- Indi Lime (Karnataka): Known for its superior quality, zesty aroma, high juice yield, and balanced acidity.
- Puliyankudi Lime (Tamil Nadu): Especially the Kadayam variety, recognised for its thin peel, strong acidity, high ascorbic acid (vitamin C) content, and juice percentage of around 55%.
- Strategic Importance:
- This export aligns with the Government of India’s push for promoting GI-tagged products globally under Atmanirbhar Bharat and Vocal for Local initiatives.
- Enhances India’s agricultural export diversification, particularly in value-added fruits and horticultural produce.
- Strengthens India’s trade relationship with the UK and showcases regional agro-specialties on the global stage.
- Institutional Role:
- APEDA, under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, facilitated the process, ensuring quality control, logistics coordination, and compliance with UK import standards.
