Indian Climbers Conquer Never-Climbed-Before 'Gupt Parvat' in Himachal Pradesh
Analysis:
- Expedition Details: A team of nine climbers from West Bengal, under the Sonarpur Arohi mountaineering club and led by Rudra Prasad Halder, successfully summited Gupt Parvat on 25 June 2024.
- Summit Details: The peak stands at 5,988 metres in the Pir Panjal Range of Lahul district, Himachal Pradesh. The team reached the summit around 8:45 AM after a nearly eight-hour climb from the summit camp at 5,285 metres.
- Team Composition: The expedition included Satyarup Siddhanta, Guinness Record holder for being the youngest mountaineer to climb the Seven Summits and Seven Volcanic Summits, as deputy leader, and also featured a female climber, Diposree Paul.
- Challenges Faced: The team initially aimed to summit Mt Shikar Beh (6,200 metres) but abandoned it due to an avalanche that destroyed equipment. Continuous snowfall delayed the summit push for Gupt Parvat.
- Significance of the Name: Gupt Parvat, meaning “hidden mountain,” derives its name from its virtual invisibility due to its geographical position amid other Himalayan peaks, making it difficult to photograph.
- Previous Achievements of Team Members: Members of Sonarpur Arohi have previously scaled Mt Everest from both faces, Mt Kanchenjunga, and participated in trans-Himalayan and international cycling expeditions, including Mt Kilimanjaro in Africa.
