Indian Navy Seminar on Cybersecurity Challenges in the Maritime Sector

Context:

The Indian Navy organised a high-level seminar on “Impact of Cyber Attacks on Maritime Sector and Its Effects on National Security and International Relations” at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan, New Delhi. The event brought together key government, defence, and industry stakeholders to address emerging digital threats to India’s maritime infrastructure.

  1. Strategic Objective:
    The seminar aimed to enhance national awareness about cyber threats targeting the maritime sector, which plays a vital role in India’s economic and strategic framework under Sagarmala, PM Gati Shakti, and the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
  2. Leadership and Participation:
    The event was inaugurated by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi and attended by Jitin Prasada, Minister of State for Electronics and IT & Commerce and Industry. Officials from multiple ministries, national security agencies, and private sector representatives participated.

    • Impact of global cyber threats on maritime infrastructure.
    • Need for integrating cybersecurity from the design stage of maritime systems.
    • Strengthening civil–military coordination for information sharing.

    Experts from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, National Security Council Secretariat, Directorate General of Hydrocarbons, CERT-In, and National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC) contributed to discussions on resilience frameworks.
  5. Aatmanirbhar Cybersecurity Ecosystem:
    A parallel technology exhibition showcased indigenous cybersecurity innovations developed by Indian startups in collaboration with the Data Security Council of India, reinforcing the goal of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in digital defence technology.
  6. Strategic Significance:
    Cyber threats to ports, naval networks, and offshore energy systems can have far-reaching economic and geopolitical consequences. The seminar reinforced the need for integrated maritime–cyber defence to protect India’s national interests and ensure maritime domain security in the Indo-Pacific.
