INS Nilgiri – In News
- INS Nilgiri, the lead ship of the Nilgiri-class stealth guided missile frigates, made her maiden entry into Chennai harbour.
- Built indigenously under Project 17A, symbolising India’s growing prowess in shipbuilding & maritime self-reliance.
- Equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, enhancing Indian Navy’s operational capabilities.
- Commissioned into the Indian Navy by PM Narendra Modi on 15th January 2025.
- Named after the Nilgiri Hills.
- The Nilgiris district:
- Houses the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), Wellington, established August 1947 (one of India’s oldest military institutions).
- Home of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw (former Chief of Army Staff & legendary military leader).
