📰 IN NEWS – India’s First Vertical Bi-Facial Solar Plant at Okhla Vihar Metro
Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar inaugurated India’s first vertical bi-facial solar plant on the Metro Viaduct at Okhla Vihar Metro Station (Delhi).
Also inaugurated: a 1 MW rooftop solar power plant at Khyber Pass depot.
Bi-facial solar panels capture sunlight from both sides, increasing efficiency.
The panels are mounted on the elevated metro structure—using no extra land.
The innovation aims to make metro rail operations more sustainable and aligns with India’s renewable energy and net-zero 2070 commitments.
The launch took place during the International Conference on ‘Green Metro Systems – The Future of Urban Mobility’ in New Delhi.
The event was organised by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) under the banner of i-Metro, in association with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).
Khattar highlighted that energy-efficient LEDs, vertical solar panels, regenerative braking and responsible consumption are key to sustainable urban living.
DMRC is already a pioneer in solar power integration, meeting a significant portion of its energy needs via solar sources.
