PM Modi conferred prestigious ‘Mithra Vibhushana’ medal by Sri Lanka

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred the prestigious ‘Mithra Vibhushana’ medal, the highest civilian honour of Sri Lanka, in recognition of his efforts to deepen India–Sri Lanka relations and promote shared cultural and spiritual heritage.
- Awarded by: President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Presidential Secretariat, Colombo
- Instituted in: 2008 by then President Mahinda Rajapaksa
- Notable past recipients: Former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat
- Significance of the Medal’s Symbols:
- Dharma Chakra → Shared Buddhist heritage
- Pun Kalasa (ceremonial pot with rice) → Prosperity & renewal
- Navarathna (nine gems in a globe) → Enduring India–Sri Lanka friendship
- Lotus petals → Purity and cultural ties
- Sun & Moon → Timeless relationship
- PM Modi’s Statement: “It is an honour for me and for 1.4 billion Indians.”
- This is the 22nd international award received by PM Modi from a foreign nation.
