PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY) – Key Highlights
Launch & Objective:
- Launched on 13 February 2024 by PM Narendra Modi.
- Aim: 1 crore rooftop solar installations by March 2027 to provide free electricity to households.
- World’s largest domestic rooftop solar initiative.
Progress & Impact:
- 10 lakh installations expected by March 2025; projected 40 lakh by March 2026.
- 1.45 crore registrations and 26.38 lakh applications on the National Portal as of Dec 2024.
- Reduces household electricity bills; enables sale of surplus electricity to DISCOMs.
- Estimated government savings: ₹75,000 crore annually.
Subsidy & Financing:
- Subsidy up to 40%based on monthly electricity consumption:
- 0–150 units → 1–2 kW → ₹30,000–₹60,000
- 150–300 units → 2–3 kW → ₹60,000–₹78,000
300 units → Above 3 kW → ₹78,000
- Collateral-free loans up to 3 kW at ~7% interest from public sector banks.
Expected Outcomes:
- 30 GW solar capacity addition from residential rooftops.
- Environmental benefits: 720 million tonnes CO₂ reduction over 25 years; 1000 BUs electricity generation.
- Job creation: ~17 lakh direct jobs across manufacturing, logistics, installation, O&M, and allied services.
Model Solar Village Component:
- One Model Solar Village per district, with ₹1 crore central assistance per selected village.
- Villages selected based on distributed renewable energy capacity.
- Focus on rural energy self-reliance and clean energy adoption.
Significance:
- Promotes Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat through domestic solar manufacturing.
- Supports India’s clean energy transition and renewable energy leadership globally.
