Rubber Research Institute of India launches mobile app for natural rubber, CRISP

CRISP Mobile App for Natural RubberContext:

The Rubber Research Institute of India (RRII), in collaboration with the Digital University of Kerala, has launched a mobile application named CRISP (Comprehensive Rubber Information System Platform). The app aims to provide comprehensive guidance and information for rubber farmers and stakeholders in the natural rubber sector. Objectives of the CRISP App:

  • Agricultural Support: Disseminates information on Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) specific to rubber cultivation.
  • Technology Integration: Utilises WebGIS technology and Information & Communication Technology (ICT) for precise, location-specific guidance.
  • Risk Management: Identifies areas prone to landslides and floods and suggests appropriate farming practices in such regions.
  • Production Support: Offers guidance on rubber tapping, processing methods, and pest/disease management.
  • Market Intelligence: Updates domestic and international prices for various natural rubber products, including sheet rubber, latex, cup lump, and block rubber.
  • Stakeholder Connectivity: Provides information about Rubber Producers’ Societies (RPS), Group Processing Centres (GPC), Rubber Board offices, and nurseries.

Significance:

  • Farmer Empowerment: Enables rubber farmers to make informed decisions on cultivation and processing, thereby enhancing productivity and reducing losses.
  • Disaster Mitigation: By highlighting vulnerable areas, the app helps prevent crop damage due to natural calamities.
  • Market Awareness: Farmers can access real-time price data, assisting them in marketing their produce effectively and preventing exploitation.
  • Digital Agriculture: Reflects the growing use of ICT and digital tools in India’s agriculture sector, aligning with the Digital India initiative.
  • Sectoral Development: Strengthens the natural rubber industry by improving efficiency, reducing risk, and connecting various stakeholders.

Challenges & Considerations:

  • Ensuring adoption among small and marginal farmers who may have limited digital literacy.
  • Regular updating of price data and localized farming recommendations to maintain accuracy and relevance.
  • Integration with other government agricultural schemes and platforms for wider reach.
