Sagarmala Programme
Launch & Vision:
- Launched: March 2015 by Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW).
- Aim: Transform India’s maritime sector via port modernization, connectivity, coastal economic development, and logistics efficiency.
- Coastal advantage: 7,500 km coastline, 14,500 km navigable waterways.
- Vision 2047 alignment: Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision (MAKV), with targets like 4 million GRT shipbuilding capacity, 10 billion MT port handling annually.
Projects & Investments:
- Total projects identified: 839 worth ₹5.79 lakh crore; 272 completed (₹1.41 lakh crore invested).
- Sagarmala 2.0: ₹40,000 crore budgetary support; aims to leverage ₹12 lakh crore investment over next decade.
Key Achievements:
- Coastal shipping growth: 118% over last decade.
- Inland waterway cargo: 700% increase.
- Ro-Pax ferries: 40 lakh+ passengers benefited.
- Ports globally ranked: 9 Indian ports in top 100, Vizag in top 20 container ports.
