Union Minister for Rural Development and Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan chaired a high-level review meeting at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi, to assess the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and to outline an action plan for the upcoming months.

Key Highlights:

  1. Comprehensive Review of PMGSY Implementation:
The meeting reviewed state-wise progress, with officials presenting data on project completion, ongoing works, and pending targets. Despite temporary delays in hilly and disaster-prone regions, the scheme’s overall progress was assessed as satisfactory and on schedule.
  2. Focus on Priority Regions:
    • The Minister emphasized accelerating connectivity projects in Northeastern states and Left-Wing Extremism (LWE)-affected areas, including Chhattisgarh.
    • A dedicated review meeting for the Northeast region will soon be convened, bringing together Chief Ministers and state representatives to evaluate major rural development schemes.
  3. Integration with Other Rural Development Schemes:
The upcoming regional review will also cover:
    • Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA)
    • Skill Development programmes
    • National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM)
This integrated approach aims to ensure convergence across rural development initiatives for maximum socio-economic impact.
  4. 25th Anniversary of PMGSY:
    • The Minister announced nationwide celebrations in December 2025 to mark 25 years of PMGSY.
    • A comprehensive report documenting the scheme’s journey and contribution to rural transformation will be released.
    • Chouhan described PMGSY as “a historic initiative that changed both the condition and direction of India’s villages.”
  5. Emphasis on Quality and Timely Completion:
    • Chouhan instructed officials to accelerate construction, ensure quality assurance, and resolve inter-departmental coordination issues at the state level.
    • Stress was laid on ensuring last-mile connectivity and maintenance of rural roads for long-term sustainability.
  6. Impact and Strategic Significance:
    • PMGSY has been a cornerstone of rural infrastructure development since its launch in 2000, connecting habitations with all-weather roads.
    • It has played a crucial role in reducing rural isolation, enhancing access to markets, education, and healthcare, and boosting rural employment.
