Two-day meeting of GST Council to begin on Sept 3
📌 In News – UPSC
The 56th Meeting of the GST Council will be held on 3rd and 4th of next month in New Delhi, chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
🔹 The 55th GST Council Meeting was held in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan (Dec 2024).
🔹 Key decisions then included:
- Cutting GST on fortified rice kernels to 5%.
- Recommendation to amend the definition of pre-packaged and labelled items.

📖 GST Council – Constitutional Provisions- Constitutional Body: Article 279A (inserted by the 101st Constitutional Amendment Act, 2016).
- Purpose: Recommend on issues related to Goods & Services Tax (GST).
