UbiQD and First Solar Establish Long-Term Quantum Dot Supply Agreement

UbiQD, Inc., a US-based global leader in quantum dot (QD) nanotechnology, has signed an exclusive multi-year agreement to supply its proprietary fluorescent QD technology to First Solar, Inc.
These quantum dots will be incorporated into First Solar’s thin-film bifacial photovoltaic (PV) solar panels, aiming to enhance their light conversion efficiency.
This marks the first high-volume QD supply agreement outside of display applications, a major milestone for the quantum dot industry.
UbiQD’s technology was developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory and MIT, and can more than double the bifacial quantum efficiency for specific wavelengths.
Expected outcome: improve energy yield and cost-effectiveness in utility-scale solar power production.
This builds upon a joint R&D collaboration since 2023 between the two companies, now expanded to further optimize PV module performance.
Comes as the US seeks to expand domestic clean energy manufacturing capacity for AI, data centers, and industrial demand.
UbiQD plans to build one of the world’s highest-volume QD manufacturing facilities in New Mexico following its $20M Series B fundraise (April 2025).
