According to the India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2023, released by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Uttar Pradesh recorded the 2nd highest increase in forest and tree cover in India.

- 1st: Chhattisgarh (+683.62 sq km)
- UP: 2nd (+559.19 sq km)
- 3rd: Odisha (+558.57 sq km)
- Total Forest Cover (2023):15,045.80 sq km (6.24% of total geographical area)
- Tree Cover: 8,950.92 sq km (3.72%)
- Total Green Cover: 23,996.72 sq km (9.96%)
- District Highlights:
- Highest green cover rise: Jhansi (+8,597 acres), Amroha (+7,769 acres)
- Leading forest area: Sonbhadra (2,407.87 sq km), Kheri (1,234.13 sq km)
- Forest Types:
- Very Dense Forest (VDF, ≥70% canopy): 2,688.73 sq km
- Moderately Dense Forest (MDF, 40–70%): 4,001.41 sq km
- Open Forest (OF, 10–40%): 8,355.66 sq km
- Scrub (<10% canopy): 639.51 sq km
- Key Initiatives:
