  • Focus: India’s vision and capabilities in renewable energy and green hydrogen

2. India’s Renewable Energy Status

  • Total installed RE capacity (2025): 223 GW
    • Solar: 108 GW
    • Wind: 51 GW
  • Global Standing: Among fastest-growing renewable energy markets
  • Vision:
    • Energy independence by 2047
    • Net Zero emissions by 2070

3. National Green Hydrogen Mission (Launched 2023)

  • Initial allocation: USD 2.4 billion
  • Targets by 2030:
    • 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) green hydrogen production
    • Avoid ~50 MMT CO₂ emissions annually
    • Attract USD 100 billion investments
    • Generate 600,000+ jobs
  • Key objectives:
    • Identify and create demand in potential sectors
    • Provide incentives for domestic production capacity
    • Support infrastructure and technological adoption

4. Progress & Implementation

  • Production & Manufacturing:
    • 862,000 TPA green hydrogen production capacity allocated to 19 companies
    • 3,000 MW annual electrolyzer manufacturing capacity awarded to 15 firms
  • Pilot projects: Steel, mobility, shipping sectors
  • Policy initiatives:
    • Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme launched
    • Exemption from Environmental Clearance for Green Hydrogen & Green Ammonia plants
    • 15 states announced supportive policies
  • Green Hydrogen Hubs at ports: Kandla, Paradip, Tuticorin (MoPSW initiative)

5. Challenges

  • High production costs
  • Lack of standardized frameworks
  • Infrastructure limitations
  • Need for scaling up domestic hydrogen economy

6. Strategic Vision

  • Domestic: Meet India’s green hydrogen demand
  • Global: Become a major exporter of green hydrogen by 2030
  • Contribution to global decarbonization and climate goals
