Zambia launches 100 megawatt solar plant supplying First Quantum Minerals
📰 IN NEWS – Zambia Launches 100 MW Solar Plant Supplying First Quantum Minerals
Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema inaugurated the country’s largest grid-connected solar power plant (100 MW) at Chisamba, built by PowerChina.
The plant will supply electricity to copper miner First Quantum Minerals, freeing up grid capacity for general Zambian consumers.
Zambia relies heavily on hydropower, but low water levels due to severe drought have caused electricity rationing by state utility ZESCO.
The solar project will reduce dependence on electricity imports from South Africa and Mozambique.
Authorities plan to add another 100 MW at the Chisamba site (timeline not yet specified).
President Hichilema emphasised the project as part of efforts to diversify Zambia’s energy mix and strengthen energy security in the face of climate-induced drought.
